Stripes 101

Spring is right around the corner and as Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren exhibited during New York Fashion week, stripes are here and here to stay.  Stripes are a staple in every woman’s closet but many women are intimidated with the classic pattern.   Understanding your body shape and how to dress it by compensating either the smaller or bigger halves is the fool proof formula for a stripe-chic finish.

Generally, there are four body shapes:

  • Apple
  • Pear
  • Hourglass
  • Banana

Apple shaped woman are described as having broader shoulders and bust, and narrower hips.  Women with this shape want to wear horizontal stripes on the lower half to create the illusion of being bigger on the bottom as this will create symmetry.  For a complete look, pair simple sleeveless top with an A-lined, horizontal striped skirt and chunky heels for a long, full legged look.

Apple-shaped Celeb Twin – Mindy Kaling, Drew Barrymore

When a woman’s hip measurements are greater than their bust measurements, this is described as having a pear shaped body.  To create the illusion of a narrow bottom, wear vertical stripes on the bottom to elongate the body.  To balance the width of the hips, opt for a boatneck striped top to create the visual illusion of broad top.

Pear Shaped Celeb Twin – Beyonce, Rihanna

Hourglass is the most desired shaped.  Here, the hip and bust are almost of equal size, with a narrow waist.  When dressing this shape, make sure stripes are all going the same direction.  You want to draw focus on the bust and hips.

Banana or Flute shaped women have slim and slender figures with a boyish frame and no distinctive curve.  With this shape, glamorize yourself with a maxi dress, cinch the waist with a belt and pair with a denim jacket to create the illusion of having curves.
